State Required Assessments
Kindergarten: WaKIDS
The Washington Kindergarten Inventory of Developing Skills (WaKIDS) is a transition process that helps to ensure a successful start to the K-12 experience and connect the key adults in a child’s life.

K-2 Dyslexia Screener
Students in grades K-2 are screened for indications of below-grade level literacy development, including indications of or areas of weakness associated with dyslexia. More about dyslexia and the screening requirements
2nd Grade Reading Law
All 2nd graders are assessed on their oral reading fluency proficiency each fall in accordance with the Second Grade Reading Assessment requirement. To learn more about this requirement, visit: OSPI Reading Requirements
Language Learners: WIDA
Washington state uses the WIDA consortium assessments to measure English proficiency for students who qualify for English Language Development services at school. Click here to learn more about the English language proficiency assessment.
3rd-8th: SBA (ELA & Math)
Washington students are required to take the Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBA) in English language arts (ELA) and math in grades 3–8 and 10; these assessments are required for federal and state accountability. Click here to learn more about the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium
5th & 8th WCAS
Washington students are assessed on their knowledge of the Washginton science standards through the Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science in grades 5, 8, and 11. Click here to learn more about the WCAS.

Highly Capable
All 2nd graders have the opportunity to be screened for the Highly Capable Program by participating in the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) assessment in January/February. Students in K-1 and 3-8 are able to take this assessment upon referral. More about the CogAT
